Anointed for a Purpose Sermon

Sermon notes on 1 Samuel 9:15 & 10:1

1 Samuel 9:15-10:1, 10:5-9

Main Point- God anointed Saul to be king for His purpose, His glory and He became changed and equipped.  God has also anointed us, His beloved for His purpose, His glory, and in Him we have been changed and equipped.

 

What do you think of when you hear the word anointed?

  • It speaks to be purposed for God and His glory
  • “He got that oil” , they are “oily”
    • Because to be anointed is to have oil poured on or rubbed
• Talk about anointed in scripture:

Anointing Oil

• Exodus 30:22-33

• • • The altar was anointed w/ oil before sacrificing

• Everything in the tabernacle was anointed Ark, tent, table,utensils, lampstand, altars, basin, everything in the sanctuary was anointed with this oil to make it holy, to be used by God!

• • Aaron and his sons were anointed to be priests 
  • Kings were anointed
  • Prophets
• Jesus, was the Messiah, “the anointed one”
  • Christ-christos, means anointed one, Messiah is the Hebrew version of anointed one

For the purpose of this sermon, we will define Anointed as:

to be chosen and made holy for God’s purposes and glory.

 

Jesus is the anointed one and all anointing is for God’s glory and His purposes and in His power.  The anointing is the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. 

 

As we look at Saul’s anointing and the believer’s anointing, understand that it is all about God and not about us!

I want to use the text as a rubric to compare and explain God’s annointing.

 

King Saul’s anointing:

1. It was pre-destined
   1. Vs 16
2. It is for God
   1. Vs 16 emphasis on MY
3. It was for a purpose
   1. Vs 16 to be prince over His people, save from Philistines
4. It isn’t earned or reserved for the powerful
   1. Vs 21 Benaminite, least of tribes, humblest of all the clans of Benjamin
5. It is prepared for him
   1. Vs 23 saved and prepared a portion for him
6. It was done in private, but made public later
   1. Vs 27-10:1 
7. It turned him into another man and changed his heart
   1. 10:6, 9

 

Jesus’s anointing

Luke 4:16-21

1. Pre-destined
   1. Isiaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
2. It is for the Father
   1. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes on Him shall not perish but have everlasting life
3. It was for a purpose and is for a purpose
   1. Luke 19:10 Jesus said, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
   2. John 12:27 s“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.”
   3. 1 Timothy 1:15 “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”
   4. Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
   5. John 10:10 Jesus said, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
   6. 1 John 3:8 “The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.”
   7. Hebrews 7:24-25 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost[b] those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

 

1. He didn’t come from a powerful family or area
2. It was prepared for Him
3. It was done in eternity past and revealed
4. He is the same yesterday today and forever

 

Our anointing

Are we anointed?

1 John 2:26-27, yes!

God has anointed you for His purpose and His glory.  Lets take that seriously.  Lets walk in the confidence that whom God has anointed, He has equipped.

 

• You are anointed to be ambassadors
• You are anointed to live holy
• You are anointed to raise your families in God
• You are anointed to be used by God
• You are anointed to know God
• You are anointed to be a child and co-heir w/ Christ
• You are anointed to serve here at your Church
• You are anointed to have victory over sin
• You are anointed to pray and receive answers
• You are anointed to let your light shine among men

 

For the unbeliever, you can be anointed by God, but first you must surrender your life to Him, turn away and renounce your sins, and believe on Jesus.
