Who is Jesus to you?

Intro- today we are going to talk about Jesus Christ

    • Last name which is Christ
    • Change to Jesus Christ
      • Jesus + title
      • Annointed one
        • Annointed means to be chosen by God for a purpose
          • Kings were annointed
            • Jesus is the king
  • Philippians 2:5-11
              • Revelation calls Him the King of Kings and Lord of Lords
          • Priest were annointed
            • Jesus is our high priest
              • Hebrews 2:17 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 10:11-14 11And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But when Christb had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
        • Jesus was born into this world for a purpose
        • Jesus was annointed for a purpose
  • John 3:16
        • Jesus preached His first sermon from the book of Isaiah
          • Luke 4:16-21 The spirit of the lord is upon me…
        • Save us from our sins
        • Bring us back to the father
        • To die a substitutionary death
        • To raise Himself up from the grave
          • 1 Corinthians 15:54b-57 “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • As we jump in to the text about Jesus, Jesus is going to ask, “who do they say I am?”, who do you, my disiciples say I am? And Peter is going to answer flat footedly, “you are the Christ”
    • Today we are going to be confronted with those same questions from Jesus and my prayer is that we will have the same faith filled, holy spirit revealed response, that Jesus is the Christ, and that He is Lord of our life!  Lets jump in!

Mark 8:27-30
27 And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “who do people say that I am?”

28 And they told him, “john the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”

29 and he asked them, “but who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “you are the Christ.”

30 and he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

Three movements: who do people say I am, who do you say I am, and who He is.

*1 movement one, who do people say that I am*

27 And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “who do people say that I am?”

28 And they told him, “john the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”

    • Good people, godly people,  but pale in comparison to whom Jesus really is
      • Talk about now
        • Good man
        • Muslims
        • Jewish
        • Ghandi
        • Great message of love
        • But He is more, He is the king of kings and the lord of lords!
    • Who do people say I am…who do people say Jesus is?
      • This question, these responses are so important.
        • We can look to our world and our culture to see what the worlds answer is to the question of who Jesus is
          • Irreverant, drunk, gay Jesus
          • Schoolbus story
          • Politics and jesus mixing
          • Those who are confused and “guess they believe in jesus”
          • The world doesn’t know who Jesus is, but it is our job to show them and tell them
            • Show them by Matthew 5:16
            • Tell them by declaring the name of Jesus’
              • Declare Jesus in conversation
              • Declare Jesus in context of friendship
              • Declare Jesus
                • Romans 1:16 for we are not ashamed of gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes!
    • I find it Interesting that the people didn’t recognize Him for who He was despite being around Him constantly
      • For us, people are around us constantly
      • They know you are different
      • They know you aren’t like them, but sadly many don’t know why
        • Declare Jesus!
          • Declare Jesus on your job, school, neighborhood, friends, family, at church, social clubs, at the bar)
  • 2 corinthians 5:18-20  gives us this charge (ministry of reconciliation)
      • So family, it is our job to tell the world who Jesus is
      • It is our job to tell “them”, “those people”, “those who clearly aren’t christian” who Jesus is to the glory of God!
      • You too, have been annointed for this purpose
        • God didn’t give you the holy spirit to put in a trophy case, but to use
          • Lets not be the sports car in the garage that never sees the light of day

*2 who do you say that I am*

29 and he asked them, “but who do you say that I am?”

    • Who do you say Jesus is _________? 3x
    • Who is Jesus to you?’
    • The implications to what your answer to this echos in eternity
      • It is a very serious question
      • Are you undecided on who He is?
      • Do you really care who He is?
      • Are you skeptical?
      • Are you fully convinced?
      • Are you “over Jesus”
      • You have to choose!
      • Your answer is a pre-cursor to your final destination, Heaven with your maker or Hell with the traitors
    • our answer to this question has to push us to seek God to reveal and draw us to Jesus or has to harden our heart to rebellion against Jesus.
    • If our answer is in fact, Jesus is Lord, we still must seek Him to become more of our Lord.
      • Lord of our emotions
      • Lord of our relationships
      • Lord of our money
      • Lord of our time
      • Lord of our body
      • Lord of our mind
      • Jesus has to be king of kings and lord of lords of our life
        • Thats why we pray, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven
      • Just as we never stop growing or changing as a person, our relationship with Christ can never become static, but a dynamic drawing towards Him
        • For He promises in James, draw near to me and I will draw near to you!
    • If our answer is one of uncertainty, not rebellion, but indecision, not convinced necessarily either way, you are in a good spot.  Not because of your lack of certainty, but because of the promise of God that if you seek Him, you will find Him!
  • Acts 17:26-28
  • Jeremiah 29:13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
    • Back to the text

*3 Jesus is the Christ*

Peter answered him, “you are the Christ.”

    • Turn to Matthew 16:16 for an extended version
  • For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my father who is in heaven
        • Flesh and blood, the human brain, logic…none of that revealed Jesus’ deity to Peter, but God
        • It is God that opens eyes
        • It is God that opens hearts
        • It is God who gives you faith to believe
        • So our prayer is God, will you open eyes!  Will you open ears to hear your words and believe!
  • John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
  • Peter says, you are the christ (praise team)
    • You are annointed, chosen by God, to fulfil a mission
    • Listen up, this is why Jesus came!
    • His mission was us
      • His mission was you ________ 3x
    • It was a rescue mission
    • We were without our creator, seperated by sin
      • Seperated By our evil desire to please ourselves, instead of pleasing God
      • The penalty for that sin is eternal seperation and suffering that begins in this life and extends forever
      • We deserved this judgement
      • But God sent Jesus, the annointed one on a rescue mission
      • A suicide mission, His life for ours
      • He was beat, humiliated, taunted, spit on, tortured, nailed to a piece of wood to bleed out and sufficate
      • He was born to die
      • But He didn;’t stay dead
      • After 3 days He rose again with all power
      • Victorious over death, victorious over sin, and victorious over satan
      • In Christ, we can have this same victory
      • The cost is our repentance of a life lived for us in exchange for a life of pleasing Him
      • It is belief in Jesus and surrending our life to Him as Lord
      • He promises that if we call on Him, we shall be saved!
  • Who do you say Jesus is? If you believe He is the Christ and you want to Him to be the Lord of your life, please come forward today!
  • If you have left the Lord, please come back today!
  • If you are unsure please seek Him today!
  • If He is the Lord of your life, hold on to Him and thank him today!
